"Crayons to Calculators" School Supplies Drive A Success

Crayons to Calculators - a community-wide school supply drive- works hard to supply needy students in the Boulder Valley and St. Vrain Valley public school with school supplies they need for a successful start.

Boulder Valley Credit Union branches were listed as drop off centers for the school supplies drive. Thank you for your generosity as BVCU collected a small mountain of school supplies. A special thanks to MOD Moms North, an organization who donated over 60 backpacks filled with school supplies!

There are approximately 5,000 students in Boulder Valley and 7,000 students in St. Vrain Valley public schools who have difficulty affording the $60 -$100 that it takes to start school with basic school supplies?
In 2007, with the support of the community, Crayons to Calculators provided 3,641 backpacks full of supplies to students in Boulder Valley public schools.

In 2008, over 5,200 backpacks filled with school supplies were forwarded to needy students in 92 schools in Boulder Valley and St. Vrain Valley public schools!!!!!! For more information, visit www.crayonstocalculators.org.

Congressman Udall Visits BVCU for Employer Assisted Housing Announcement

U.S. Congressman Mark Udall and Boulder’s Mayor Mark Ruzzin announced on October 19, 2006 that Boulder Valley Credit Union is the first Colorado Credit Union to offer an Employer Assisted Housing benefit program to its employees.

In addition, the credit union plans to assist its affiliated employer groups and other companies so that they can offer this exciting benefit to their employees as well. The program provides home buyers with down payment assistance to ease the burden and difficulties many home owners face. The Employer Assisted Housing program is a powerful benefit that helps home buyers achieve the dream of homeownership amid escalating housing costs. “When more employees can purchase homes within our community, the employee wins, the employer wins, our community wins,” explained Congressman Udall. Boulder’s Mayor, Mark Ruzzin commented that while housing costs are escalating, this employee benefits will help make home ownership possible for more people and help employee retention as well.

“I am extremely pleased to announce that Boulder Valley Credit Union is continually expanding our employee benefits package to include this assistance to our employees. Helping our employees become homeowners is good for our communities and our business. I encourage more employers in our community to investigate offering down payment and other housing assistance benefits, which will help them recruit and retain good employees,” said Rick Allen, BVCU's President/CEO.

Boulder Valley Credit Union will be assisting its affiliated companies with developing plans to offer this Employer Assistance Housing program to their employees. “Now that we have laid the groundwork for this exciting program, it should be much easier for other employers to develop and implement the program for their employees,” said Wayne Turnacliff, BVCU's Board Chairman.

A core value of credit unions is to give back to the communities they serve.  Boulder Valley Credit Union is committed to this deep-rooted philosophy! The announcement fell on the morning of International Credit Union Day, when over 100 million credit union members around the world celebrated the difference credit unions make in the lives of their members.

The announcement marks Boulder Valley Credit Union as the first employer in Estes Park and the first credit union in Colorado to offer this innovative program to help their employees achieve the dream of homeownership amid escalating housing costs. Estes Park Mayor, John Baudek, was present to congratulate Boulder Valley CU for pioneering this employee benefit and honoring employee Sandi DeSanti and her husband Donny, the first employee to participate in this program.

Alive at 25 Program Sponsorship

Boulder Valley Credit Union

Boulder Valley Credit Union is proud to have sponsored the Alive at 25 program/assembly for the students of Monarch High School students in May 2005 as well as Boulder High School and Estes Park High School in June 2006.This program helps teach young drivers the importance of driving responsibly while making them aware of how their actions while driving can affect the lives of others.  The Mission of the Alive At 25 program in Colorado is to get young drivers to adopt safe driving practices, take responsibility for their behavior and to be aware of many of the typical driving hazards.

This powerful program was developed by the Caitlyn Craig foundation, in conjunction with the Colorado State Patrol, to help reduce auto accidents; the number one cause of deaths in people age 15-25. The national death rate for teen crashes is 67 per 100,000. We are pleased to report that of the 50,000+ kids in Colorado who have completed the Alive at 25 classes, following their school assembly; only three have died in an auto accident. Over 85% of the students who have completed the 4 hour class highly recommend that all young drivers take the class.

The Alive at 25 class is accredited by the National Safety Council and taught by dedicated off-duty law-enforcement personnel. Unlike typical Driver's Education Courses that focus on the mechanics of driving, Alive at 25 focuses on the attitude of driving and riding in cars.
